11:17 pm - Blah.. Upgrade status.

scsi
Hi Everyone!

The upgrade didnt take place tonight. Turns out the LJ staff is making a bunch of behind-the-scenes changes to the code, and advised me to wait until tomorrow night or sunday so they can work all the bugs out of the code.

Doing the upgrade tonight would probably lead to half of the stuff breaking, etc.

However! I did use the downtime tonight to get some backend work done, so tomorrow night I'll just have to take the site down for 45 min or so (*knock on wood*) while i swap the files out then bring the site right back up.

Sorry about all of this mess, its a rough spot for all the journal sites right now.

current mood: tired

6:48 pm - Upgrade on Friday the 20th!

scsi
Hi everyone! This is [info]scsi (the guy who runs this site and pays the bills).

This is to let you all know that i'm going to be taking the site down for a few hours on Friday the 20th (this friday) to upgrade the site.

Stuff that will be new:
  • schools!
  • Nudge (or as we call it here, bitchslap) a friend!
  • Other neat stuff!

This is a really late notice because of some security stuff, and also because the journal addresses are going to be changing (much like they are on LiveJournal as well).

Since this is a hasty upgrade, there are going to be some rough edges, and some things might not work right off the bat, so just be patient as I work out all the kinks (its only me doing this, not a staff of people like on LJ).

I'll upgrade this post as more info becomes available. I have to work my ass off getting all the bugs out before Friday.. :(

    11:17 pm - Downtime Report

    scsi
    Hi Everyone,

As you probably found out for yourself, we had some site problems between 7:30pm PDT and 11pm PDT. One of the main database servers decided to lock up, so it had to scan all 11 million journal entries 20 million comments and like 2 million interests for errors before it brought itself back up. That took some time, but everything should be okay (the time may be off for a day, then it'll correct itself). I'll probably be up all night watching the damn thing in case it decides to die again.. :(

Sorry for the downtime everyone. I wish there was a better way to do this, but DJ has no money.. :(

    Hi everyone!

As you probably have found out already, we've upgraded the server code! Its been almost 2 years since DeadJournal has updated its site, so considering how much stuff changed we are sure to get a few glitches.

Bear with my typing, Ive had less than 3 hours of sleep.. :(

Here are the most notable (point your friends here if they ask you about any of this. Then call them a dumbass for not having [info]new_shit on their friends list).

  • The HTML cleaner is really really strict about having proper HTML in your styles. If you get a "irrepairable markup" error, its probably because you need to tweak your HTML overrides.

  • OpenID is turned off, there is a bug that I need to talk to Brad from LJ about before I try fixing it.. You will still be able to use your DJ account to comment on LiveJournal (theres a faq about it), but you wont be able to have people comment on your DJ via LJ until I get this problem sorted out.

  • We lost a server in the process (disk went out).. I wont have enough time to fix/replace it but there is a redundant one working so you probably wont know a difference (except the DJ banner ads wont work, but those rarely show anyways). Shift-refresh will pull any broken images. I'm redoing the whole server layout, so it shouldnt be much of an issue.

  • If you dont like the new layout, you can always change it back to the original at http://www.deadjournal.com/manage/siteopts.bml By default it'll show this one, but if you change yours, it'll save a cookie that will display the layout you choose when you use that browser/login. I know some of the HTML is jacked on wide pages, especially up at the top banner.. We're working on this bug (its a minor one at that).

  • The whole mixup this morning about you going to www.vadept.com (my personal homepage) rather than www.deadjournal.com was a b0rk on my part... I typed 209.142.3.150 when I should of typed 209.142.3.148 at 2am this morning.. Yeah, uhh, sorry? Its fixed now (hopefully)... Nothing was wrong with the server per se, but my mistake made www.deadjournal.com go to someplace else rather than to the server that runs the site... I hope this makes sense.

Things will slowly get better, dont worry.. Have a happy 4th! Dont blow off any fingers! California residents have my sympathy for having the lamest firework laws on the planet.. If you're bored you can click on the google ads to make DJ some money (or just get a paid account) :)

Oh, and remember that its just me who runs the backend for DJ, so cut me a little slack.. :)

    10:21 pm - Ack, clarification

    scsi
About S2 and free accounts. There was a bit of confusion (and I worded it poorly).

Free accounts will not be able to CREATE new S2 styles. You WILL still be able to alter the pre-made ones here on DJ (like colors, fonts, etc).. You just cannot make your own.. Since S2 is its own programming language, I doubt any of you will be affected by this.

Basically /customize/advanced will be taken away for free accounts.. Dont worry, you can still change colors and stuff. Just no NEW custom S2 styles for the free accounts (we'll be adding some more S2 styles for the free accounts over time).

10:09 pm - Site will be down this Friday 7/1/05

    scsi
    Hi Everyone!

This is [info]scsi, the guy who runs this dump..er..place.

This is a friendly reminder that i'll be taking the site down this friday around 10:00 Pacific (give or take a few hours) to upgrade the site. The upgrade should (hopefully) take a few hours or so pending nothing blows up.

Its been about 2 years since the last code upgrade, and we're adding a bunch of new things.

  • Tags support
  • OpenID Support (you can use your DeadJournal account to comment on LiveJournal/etc).. More instructions later.
  • New layout!
  • Bunch of other stuff.
  • A new paid-user only S2 style.

I am however removing the ability for FREE accounts to alter S2 styles. If you have no idea what S2 is, then this wont affect you.. A handful of people have been abusing S2 and stealing paid-user only styles, so we're forced to do this (Stealing paid-only s2 styles just makes the people who work hard to create these styles mad, and refuse to make any more for us to use)... S1 (overrides, etc) will still be wide-open for anyone to use/alter.

If you want to help everyone out, head over to our test server at http://trinary.deadjournal.org and check out the new styles/features! If you see anything wierd or plain out doesnt work, let us know and we'll fix it before it goes on the main site.

Since this is a big code upgrade, I kindly ask that you wont bombard me with "THIS DOESNT WORK" complaints moments after I upgrade the site. It'll take about a week to work out all the bugs, so just file a request with support and be patient. Some issues I might have to bring upstream to the LiveJournal staff for bugfixes, so it might be a bit before things work perfectly.

    Thanks everyone!

8:59 pm - New DeadJournal IRC Server!

    scsi
    Hi everyone!

Due to popular demand, we have opened up a DeadJournal IRC server.

Point your IRC clients to irc.deadjournal.com:6667 and join in on the fun in #deadjournal!

Please note that we offer zero support nor abuse services for this IRC server. It is completely 100% optional and any abuse requests opened regarding this server will be promptly closed/ignored...

This is only a test to see if there is any interest in it, so consider it beta at best.

Update: Yeah, the server died last night, its better now.. Told ya its a beta at best.. :)

    niftybitch
Well damnit. I'm disappointed to say this, but we've had more comments about people wishing photo manipulation was allowed than we have had submissions.

So... After much thought, I've decided that in addition to making the deadline December 10th, 2004, I'm also going to change the Picture Contest to allow photo manipulation.

And... Just to add a few random pictures to the group I've put some up here.

Have fun and send them to djbios@deadjournal.com.

    Re: Picture contest

Due to the low amount of submissions we've had so far, I've decided to extend the deadline to December 10, 2004.

C'mon guys! I know you've got it in you.

12:24 pm - One more contest....

    niftybitch
As if we'd have these great bios written up for us and not have some pictures to go along with them. ;)

This contest calls for all of the artists on Deadjournal. What we want is basically an original (no photo manipulation will be accepted) drawing of our "character" based on the winning bios obituaries. You can do pretty much whatever you want as long as it pertains to the bio. So whether you put a tiara on me or surround Frank by eight step-children, as long as it's original, it will be considered.

I've included shots of us below in addition to the bios. Granted they aren't the best but it should give you something to work with. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to draw us as we look.

Also we ask that the pictures are a size of 250x250 pixels.

    Bios & Pictures )

I understand that this may take a bit for people to do, so I'm making the deadline December 3rd, 2004. Please e-mail them to djbios@deadjournal.com for consideration and remember to include your username.

Remember that we will not accept photo manipulation.

    Thanks everyone!

    niftybitch
    Hello everyone!

Frank and I can't thank you enough for participating in the bio contest and the opinion poll. We decided to listen to the people and go with the bios that got the most votes.

Therefore our winner is [info]ojisan for both. Congrats!

As mentioned in my previous post, I said that all users listed would get something for their effort...

Here is a breakdown of who got what. )

    Thanks!

First off and foremost, a big "Thank you!" from myself and Frank to all of you who submitted bios. We enjoyed reading each and every one of them, even if we didn't necessarily understand it. ;) It's nice to see that we've got a lot of talented users here willing to contribute to silly things such as this.

Frank and I have both narrowed it down to our top 4 favorites. If you'd like have a say in it, select the ones you like best in the poll below. I'm disabling comments for obvious reasons.

Here they are in no particular order.

Keep in mind that we are just using this to help us decide, and the "winner" here may not be what we choose in the end. All those listed here will get some sort of prize for their time and effort.

** Honorable mention to [info]rennahalcyon who's bio will be used to serve as a prelude to the chosen bios.

    Hello everyone.

This is just a reminder that our bio contest deadline is tomorrow (11/19/04).

We've gotten a lot of good submissions already and it may be a little tough to decide on a winner. [info]scsi and I might have to ask for your opinion once we've narrowed it down to our favorites.

11:52 pm - Its contest time!

    scsi
    Hi everyone!

This is your wonderful and loved sysadmin (and owner person) [info]scsi *crowd booing*.

In order to make us seem like a more "professional" website (heh riiight), the other fearless leader (the charming and lovely writer/speller/moral support/"quit crying frank, its not that bad"/everything else type from the wonderful UK) Tiffany ([info]niftybitch) *crowd cheering* thought that a little staff page about us two would be nice. Good idea right?

Wrong, we suck at writing bios... Plus most bios are boring! We're not boring here (well, I am, Tiffanys not).. Plus I get writers block easy! It took me a half hour and lots of alcohol for me to even write this! I suck!

So this is where we need your help. Write a funny or amusing bio for Tiffany and myself. Go to our userinfo pages if you need some ammo. We want funny and creative. If you need some inspiration, check out the Winamp staff page at http://www.winamp.com/about/team.php (please dont rip their bios off, thats lame and deserves a suspens..er..spanking)

Mail all submissions to djbios@deadjournal.com. Remember to include your username in case we pick you as the winner..

Free paid account (or maybe even a permanent account) goes to the ones we think rock the most ass.. Hell, i'll even give you mad propz here in [info]new_shit so you can be the envy of your friends (and get 10000 people to friend and bug you 24/7 via AIM)!

Remember, we need bios for [info]scsi and [info]niftybitch

    Remember! Funny, creative, and DJ'ish!

Since LJ is aboug 99% Liberal, I figure that since we are DeadJournal, we should be sorta different (or at least somewhat different)..

This is totally optional, nobody can see how you voted, please be honest. Everyone is invited to vote.. If you use multiple accounts to cast multiple votes i'll find out and kill your accounts.. :)

All in good fun.. Comments are turned off because of the idiots.

    Dear Fellow Deadjournalians.

As said also on LJ, tomorrow is a very special day. If you are over 18 (and live in the US), please go and vote.

Although both sides may bitch about each other over whom should be president, we both have a common ground: We all feel that you should exercise your democratic right to vote. A ton of people died so you can make a difference in the world. Do not feel like your vote does not count, it does (especially in this election).

    Please go and vote. Please!

Update: I turned off commenting.. Cant even have a decent post without people going and ruining it for everyone.. Love the maturity.
