	fwiw, most of my commenters are anon or OpenID - would OpenID users get captcha'd if you do add it to anon posting? (Reply to this) (Thread)

Oddly enough, my entry that's been getting the most spambot comments (there seems to have been a huge surge in those these last few days) has been my "how to leave me a comment using OpenID" entry ... on nearly every site I mirrored it to!

I've been wondering whether it's a merely coincidental fluke, or the mention of OpenID and/or anonymous commenting somehow attracted some spambot's target selection algorithm.

	I guess I'm just lucky (or perhaps it's because I have the 'go away search crawlers' setting turned on?) but I've not had any spambot comments yet. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

I think I am being indexed, so that'd be one variable, yah. It may well explain your not getting any blogspam yet (knock wood). I do wonder about the recent uptick (nigh a surge) and whether it's just a random fluctuation in spammage, a long term change in how things are going to be, or related to what I posted.

Hmm. OT1H I wonder whether blocking spiders would do any good at this point, with so many entries already indexed. OTOH it hasn't gotten bad enough yet for hiding from spammers to outweigh being easy for human readers to find, in my personal hierarchy of priorities. (Worst case, I turn off anonymous posting entirely and tell my non-blogging friends to get an account someplace that uses a compatible version of OpenID. Or does blocking anyonymous comments also block OpenID comments?)

	:-( Sorry to hear that. (I remember when most of Usenet was still useable, and that first green-card spam, and how the folks who predicted our current spammy environment were pooh-pooed by some people as overwrought and hyperbolic. Yet here we are.) (Reply to this) (Parent)
